The Maryland Black-Eyed Susan (BES) Award Reading program is designed “to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature” (MASL, 2009).  School Library Media specialist as well as public librarians, parents, teachers, and other interested individuals across Maryland participate in a reading committee, which chooses books for students to read during the school year.  The 2016-2017 BES titles are listed below.
