World Language

Southwest Academy Middle School of Science and Engineering

The World Languages Department wishes to extend a warm welcome to the newest member of our team. Ms. Brandi Thomas joins the faculty at Southwest Academy as a full-time Spanish I 6th grade teacher.  Ms. Thomas has two years of experience teaching College and Career Readiness via Civic Works for AVID program at Southwest Academy. Ms. Olson will also be teaching 6th grade Spanish as we will be offering Spanish to all incoming 6th graders. Mr. Lawrence, Ms. Niehaus and Ms. Perez will continue on with the World Languages Department and will teach Spanish I and II to our 7th and 8th grade students.

During the fall, language students will engage in a variety of culture-based lessons and activities.  Students in Spanish will learn about Día de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday honoring deceased ancestors. Students will make traditional calaveritas de azucár, or sugar skulls, set up ofrendas, and discuss the significance of the holiday in the Spanish-speaking world. Instructors and students will engage in the new student centered curriculum by guiding instruction through the use of authentic resources and AP guided assessments. The sixth grade Spanish curriculum will implement the use of technology with the student devices. Lastly, the World Languages Department will implement AVID and WICOR strategies such as interactive notebooks and Cornell Notes to support the school-wide AVID initiative.

“Language is the roadmap of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.”
